This Traditional Black Forest cuckoo clock is possessed of a number of design elements that accentuate the woodland nature of its theme. Its most striking feature is a pair of European Red Squirrels that frame the main body of the case. Each of these highly detailed squirrels clutches a pine cone in its forepaws which matches to the pine cone weights that drive the mechanism of the cuckoo clock. The top piece of the cuckoo clock is a finely carved cuckoo bird perched impressively as if about to take flight. Large ivy leaves flank the bird on each side forming a triangular shape that is reinforced by the triangular shape of the leaves and the placement of the animals themselves. By repeating these shapes, the wood carvers give the cuckoo clock a dynamic quality that manages to retain the subtle, classic feel common to Traditional cuckoo clocks.
The squirrels and bird are also quite unique due to the fact that they are 3-D, or carved in their entirety, rather than carved in a more commonly encountered flat style. This allows delicate features within the carvings to come to the fore such as the fur of the squirrels and the small feathers of the cuckoo bird. These small accents pair perfectly with the more simple carvings of the leaves, allowing the animals to become focal points without overpowering the cuckoo clock’s design. The stain is dark, which serves to pick out the lighter details in the carvings, but also to highlight the numbers and hands on the cuckoo clock dial that are finished in a dramatically lighter tone.
