Two German knights are featured prominently on the front of the stein. They joust for dominance in front of a delicately painted castle with a red trimmed roof line. One knight bears a crest suggesting the North of Germany, while the other bears a crest suggesting the Lion of Bavaria in the South. Surrounding the knights are small reliefs of famous German cities and landmarks. These include Berlin, Cologne, Frankfurt, Heidelberg, Munich, Rothenburg and St. Goar-Rhein. Some cities are pictured simply as a skyline. Others feature prominent landmarks, such as Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate and Cologne’s highly recognizable cathedral known simply as the “Dom." Neuschwanstein Castle is also present.
The base color for the stein is glazed a glossy black. The cities, knights and detailing are done with a rustic or un-glazed finish which creates contrast. This allows the pictured elements to stand out from the background of the stein ensuring that no small detail is missed by the viewer.
