Matteo – New 2016 is a beautifully expressive figure from the ANRI Bernardi Nativity collection, designed by master sculptor Ulrich Bernardi. Introduced in ANRI’s final production years, this piece represents one of the last additions to this beloved and now discontinued series.
Matteo is depicted as an elderly traveler, gently bent forward as he walks with a staff and carries a clay jug, embodying humility, perseverance, and quiet devotion. His posture and downward gaze suggest both physical weariness and spiritual reflection, adding emotional depth to the nativity scene.
Draped in a fur-lined cloak over a simple robe, the figure reflects rustic village life while showcasing Bernardi’s remarkable ability to capture texture and movement in wood. The detailed carving of his long beard, garments, and walking stance enhances the lifelike and storytelling quality of the piece.
Expertly hand-carved from fine Alpine maple and hand-painted in warm, natural tones, this figurine demonstrates the craftsmanship of ANRI artisans in South Tyrol, Italy.
