This large and impressive cuckoo clock is an exquisite masterpiece of the Traditional Black Forest style. It subtly bridges the gap between the Hunter style and the Traditional style with its skillful use of oak leaves rather than ivy. Starting from the bottom, the base is completely covered with an ornate and expertly arranged series of ferns. This is extremely unique as most Traditional cuckoo clocks make use of ivy leaves and Hunter cuckoo clocks use oak leaves. Ferns are quite rare which serves to highlight the rest of the carvings along the base.

Directly beneath the dial of the cuckoo clock is a pair of highly detailed and richly stained bears. The carver’s use of light and dark stain creates the impression of shadow and highlights which gives the bears depth. Each bear is carved in a unique pose, making excellent use of asymmetry to give the cuckoo clock a dynamic appearance. They stand upon a carved ledge that sticks out from the ferns making it seem as though the viewer is actually watching the bears shamble about in the forest.

The oak leaves appear to grow up the sides of the cuckoo clock along the trellis framing the cuckoo clock dial, finally culminating in an ornately carved top piece. The edges of the top piece, which is also comprised of oak leaves, stick out from the sides of the cuckoo clock, balancing the design and accentuating its size. The top piece is dominated by yet another finely carved bear, richly stained like his counter-parts and placed in a dramatic pose. He looks out upon the cuckoo clock’s audience, regarding them with a mighty, regal stare – truly a King of the Forest. This clock also features colored dancers that will turn and spin while the music plays adding a delightful splash of color to the design.
