Traditional mechanical cuckoo clocks do not require batteries to operate. They rely entirely on mechanical movements powered by weights to keep time and produce the cuckoo call. The weights are typically hung from chains. There are cuckoo clock models which also feature lighting, however, and batteries are required to power the light bulbs.
