Winding a cuckoo clock involves raising the weights attached to the clock's movement. Here is how it is done:
- Identify the weights. They are shaped like pine cones and most are made out of metal. Weights can also be made out of wood. Cuckoo clocks have a minimum of 2 weights. If the clock plays music, it has three weights. One weight powers the timekeeping mechanism, while the other powers the cuckoo call. If a clock plays music, the music box is powered by a third weight.
- Locate the chains. The weights are suspended by chains. Each weight has its own chain.
- Wind the clock by gently pulling down on the chain to raise the weight up to the bottom of the clock box. For 8-Day clocks, we advise you to support the weight with one hand while pulling down on the chain with the other hand.
- Repeat for each weight.
- Ensure evenness. Once the weights are wound, check to ensure that they are at a similar height. If one weight is significantly higher or lower than the other, adjust as needed to achieve balance.
- Start the clock. After winding, gently tap the pendulum to start the clock. The clock should begin ticking.
