Traditional clocks work through gravity of at least 2 weights - one for the cuckoo mechanism and one for the clock mechanism. Clocks with 3 weights also have music and dancers. The cuckoo sound is produced through 2 bellows.
The movement determines how often the clock needs to be wound (by pulling the weights up by the chains for mechanical cuckoo clocks). A 1-day cuckoo clock needs to be done every day and an 8-day cuckoo clock about once per week.
A battery clock has a quartz movement and never needs to be wound as long as the batteries work. Quartz clocks are also programmed with 12 songs to be played at the top of the hours. The weights and chains are for decorative purposes only on battery cuckoo clocks. It is important to note that the cuckoo and music on a battery cuckoo clock sounds different than on a mechanical cuckoo clock.
