When viewing a Black Forest Chalet style cuckoo clock, the delight is in its colors and figurines and this cuckoo clock is no exception. The movement begins as a traditional Black Forest water wheel begins to spin. The painted blue accents on the tips of the wheel blades are just one example of this cuckoo clock’s fine attention to detail. A pair of children slowly turns their heads to kiss in time to the music, framing the clock face between their movements and the movement of the wheel as a small, grey cat in a wooden wagon looks on. The base of the clock is flanked by a hay shed and a wood shed respectively, which serves to further balance the design. Elements of Black Forest country living, such as a small wood pile, are scattered in a seemingly random fashion throughout the scene. The asymmetrical approach to their placement adds a startling element of realism to the cuckoo clock. To accent the cute, childlike theme, this cuckoo clock features children for dancers that spin as the music plays. Red shutters pick out the red highlights in the small outcroppings of flowers placed around the clock and also the red in the dancing girl’s dresses allowing for the eye to be guided around the clock in a pleasing fashion. The stain of the clock is mostly light in color. This is complimented by elements done in a slightly darker stain that creates contrast and which allows the bright colors of the figurines to come to the fore. This cuckoo clock also features a bell tower and a hand shingled roof.
