The Weather House: How It Works

The Weather House is more than just a charming decoration. It is a traditional piece of German craftsmanship that reacts to changes in humidity and gives a playful hint about the weather.

How It Works

The two figures inside the house hang on a natural gut string that expands or contracts depending on the humidity in the air. As the string shifts, it causes the figures to rotate and appear through the doorway.

Traditionally, the man steps out when it is rainy, while the woman enjoys her time outside in sunny weather. The small house, often styled like an Alpine chalet, may also include a built-in thermometer. This makes it a fun and functional weather station.

Setup and Operating Instructions

  1. Place the Weather House in a location with good airflow, such as a balcony, patio, or pergola.

  2. If the current weather is sunny and dry, gently turn the red knob on the rooftop (chimney) counterclockwise until the woman appears.

  3. If the weather is rainy or humid, gently turn the knob clockwise until the man appears.

  4. This adjustment only needs to be done once to match your local conditions.

Once it is set, your Weather House will continue to respond to changes in humidity on its own. No batteries, no apps, just timeless charm and clever design.
