This intricately carved and exquisitely appointed cuckoo clock is a genuine masterpiece of the classic Traditional Hunter style. When most people conjure an image of a cuckoo clock in their heads, this is the cuckoo clock they see; hanging in a dimly lit traditional hunting lodge filled with pipe smoke and the sound of German hunters clinking their beer steins. Hunter cuckoo clocks in German are called Jagdstück clocks, which translates to Hunt Piece. This means that they must be possessed of elements that relate to the hunt, the most common of which are a gun pouch or game bag and a curled German hunting horn or Jagdhorn.
Starting from the base, a gun pouch hangs symmetrically between the two lowest points on the oak leave trellis. Directly above the pouch is the cuckoo clock’s dial, which is large and easy to read. It is framed by a curved hunting horn, the bell of which is 3-D and serves to give the clock depth. Flanking the dial to either side are a rabbit and eagle respectively. This is to represent predator/prey and highlights the natural balance aspect of hunting rather than the act of hunting itself. This makes the clock more pleasing to a wider audience and increases its desirability.
The top piece of the clock is as impressive as is the real life animal that adorns it. A European Red Stag bellows into the icy clean air of a German forest surrounded by oak leaves and adds the final finishing touch to this truly unique piece. Finally, the dancers that spin when the music plays adds a splash of color that allows the subtle shades in the staining to come to the fore.
