This quaint and elaborate chalet clock depicts a charming “Hasenmichelhof” (Rabbit Farm) bustling with busy activity. Adorned with minute touches, the farmhouse chalet is detailed with a whimsical half-timbered design, windows decorated with green shutters, and intricate trim lining the underside of the roof and the upper balcony. From the peaked, shingled roof, a prominent steeple rests, as its small bell rings in motion to the sounds of the cuckoo’s calls. Below, under the covered gable, the cuckoo emerges from its door flanked by saws mounted to the walls on either side. Continuing downward, waltzing couples spin merrily on the extended ornate balcony, twirling in circles through the open doorway. Resting upon opposite ends of the railing, a small yellow bird is perched on one side, and an empty planter on the other.
Along the base, there is much work to be done on the farm. In front of the clock’s dial, the farmer stands at rest, smoking his pipe. Standing alongside of him, the gentleman’s faithful German shepherd watches ahead with its miniature wooden doghouse behind it. On the one side of the clock’s base, a charming waterwheel leisurely spins along behind a winding crosshatched wooden fence. A cluster of trees is also situated along the side of the cozy chalet, surrounding an old rustic water well.
On the opposite end of the clock base, an open wooden hutch houses a family of rabbits inside. As the clock’s music box cheerfully plays, the quartet of bunnies spin around in circular motion atop the turntable. Close by, a rooster stands next to a large pile of logs, stacked neatly at the bottom of the hutch. Continuing to the far side of the clock base, the work upon the farm continues in earnest. Two pigs are housed in a small enclosure, as a boy tries to pull one of the animals out of the pen by a rope. Above this scene, a farmhand is perched atop a ladder, hard at work on repairing the chalet’s side balcony. Further adornments across the farm scene include the charming touches of trees, wooden fences, barrels, and a wagon wheel.
