Although this cuckoo clock would technically be classified as Traditional, in reality it very subtly bridges the gap between the Station House and Traditional styles as it contains elements of both. It is possessed of the delicate scroll work that is a prominent feature of a Station House cuckoo clock, as well as the rustic, artistic quality of a Traditional cuckoo clock. It is therefore able to offer the benefits of each style; the unmistakably German feel of the classic Traditional style blended with the versatility of the Station House style.
The focal point of this cuckoo clock is its large top piece which is comprised of complex layers of finely carved ivy leaves. An ivy leaf is essentially a triangle; as the viewer gazes at this cuckoo clock more and more triangle patterns and angles begin to emerge creating a surprisingly dynamic composition. The long side trellises of the top piece guide the eye down the thick ivy vines that crawl up the sides of the cuckoo clock, culminating in a bottom piece of ivy leaves that are set in a precise curve that perfectly matches the angles of the top piece.
The manner in which the leaves are placed creates a frame for the cuckoo clock’s dial and gives the impression that the cuckoo clock is peeking out of the dense foliage that is prevalent in the Black Forest. The stain is medium dark and creates contrast with the stain in the leaf detailing in order to ensure that the color scheme does not become too muddled.
