This impressive Black Forest chalet cuckoo clock is a true collector’s piece. It exemplifies the Black Forest chalet style through its use of a complicated design and a myriad of bright, pleasant colors. The theme for the clock is of a charming cottage set deep within the dense woods of the Black Forest. This theme is complimented by the carver’s repeated use of animals, trees and other natural elements. The two pieces that dominate the clock beyond all others are the finely carved fir trees that flank the case to either side. They are stained in a medium brown with dark green detail work along the edges of the branches. The angles they form as they soar above the rest of the scene are carefully constructed to match the angles created by the roofline, which is painstakingly finished with hand laid shingles.

A plethora of animals are skillfully placed along the base of the clock. They are finished in differing colors and set in such a way so as to make the cuckoo clock appear full while avoiding the feeling of being too busy. Beginning from the far right-hand side facing the clock a young squirrel stands busily gnawing away at a tasty acorn. Next to him is a grazing deer that seems to share his idea of eating as much as he can in one sitting. They are surrounded by a number of dark green pine trees as well as artfully strewn and realistic looking forest bracken. Continuing to the left is a small, off-white bunny rabbit. He sits motionless next to a large stone that shares his coloring. Behind him is a dark bench that ensures he does not become lost amongst the rest of the scenery. To the left of the clock dial stands an adult Roebuck, standing erect and warily scanning the forest for danger as the rest of his companions enjoy their midday meal.

The panorama continues past another pair of river stones and yet more pine trees until reaching a waterwheel that will turn as the music plays. The blades of the wheel are tipped with bright blue paint in order to mimic their travel through a lazy Black Forest stream. In front of the waterwheel atop a small pile of earth sits a second bunny rabbit. Behind him stands a lightly colored deer. She seems less on edge than the Roebuck, obviously calmed by the bunny’s soothing demeanor. More rocks and small wood pieces are placed at their feet which, when combined with the cuckoo clock’s other natural elements, creates a cohesive natural scene.

The case of the chalet itself is finished in a variety of differing brown tones which gives the cuckoo clock a rustic feeling. A light natural finish is used on the front of the case surrounding the clock dial, ensuring that it is prominent and easy to read. Red shutters with colorful flowers on the window sills provide a delightful counterpoint to the staining used throughout the rest of the clock. Above the clock dial several figurines on a small balcony with gingerbread detailing will dance and spin as the music plays. The outfits of the courting couples attract the viewer’s eye and create exciting splashes of color as the dancers turn.
